Nontle shared Isa Goniwe’s post that read, “even if you’re gay you are still a man no matter the sexual orientation.” and captioned, “and being Gay is a choice, I said what I said.” which had left the LGBTIQA+ community and its activists offended. Including Nontle’s friend who’s a homosexual, Mpumezo Mbulawa.

This whole drama heated after the video of Inathi Zazi slapping a girl over sleeping with his boyfriend. Facebook went ablaze with Facebookers bashing those who were amused by this physical abuse act. The conversation went from Inathi physically abusing the girl to analysing his sexuality of being a homosexual that was displayed as a factor that didn’t make him less of a male. The opinion of Nontle Gwaza of gayness being a choice triggered the likes of Blvck045 brand ambassador and aspiring influencer, Aphelele Citani, Asihle Cekiso, Nontle’s friend, Mpumezo Mbulawa in a stance of Nontle appearing as homophobic. When Nontle was reached to comment on these claims, she highlighted the fact that she was and never have been homophobic. Nontle said that she is not changing her statement that being gay is a choice because there is nothing like a gay gene. She added that there could be a possibility that a twin could be naturally gay because of swapping of characteristics between him and his twin sister and anything other than that is genetically proven.
She added, “Guys I’m not seeking to attain/convince that gay people are weak people and not being pugnacious or belligerent to gay people, so when they say they are ‘trying to find out who they really are’. They make a choice that no, the fact that I like males more than females means that I am gay and I’ll stand to it and be proud of my sexuality.”. Oyi Ntese fully supported Nontle’s view and added, “I honestly feel like being gay is a choice. I grew up with a lot of friends who were straight for probably 13 years of their lives and then they suddenly changed at the age 14 – 15. Why the sudden change if your were born that way ? why couldn’t you express your gay “tendencies” growing up if you were really born gay? Another thing is, there is no such thing as a Gay Gene. According to my knowledge, scientists who have studied the human body have never found gay genetics in the studies they have. If you couldn’t show us the real you while you were still a child, then how is it that that’s how you were born. Honestly don’t think it’s a natural thing. I think people are just saying it’s a natural thing just because of the fact that society is opening up to this thing of being gay slowly but surely. I feel like this topic will always be a debate, and I’m not saying that’s right but that’s just how it is. The questions will never stop. That’s if we look at things from a realistic poiny of veiw. People are raised differently and they are taught what is expected of them from their different homes. Is it wrong to follow the ways you were raised by? Heck no. Is it your fault ? Heck no. It is very much is up to you to educate yourself about the LGBQT community but no one should force you into seeing things the way they see them. People have different beliefs and opinions about everything. I find it a bit disturbing that gays find what they say is always right. Every time I or someone I know voice out what they THINK is right, we’re attacked and thrown with heavy words, even though we’re entitled to our own opinion. As much as it’s a sensitive topic, you should be able to listen to what someone else has to say and understand it from their point of veiw.”.

Aphelele Citani, Mpumezo Mbulawa and Asihle Cekiso didn’t agree with Nontle’s viewpoint and Aphelele felt attacked by the statement. As for Mpumezo who’s Nontle friend said that Nontle has always treated him like a sister and he was shocked when he pulled such a stunt. He respected her viewpoint though although it was against his beliefs.
