There’s yet another beef stewing and this time, the hand of the law might have to stir the pots.
Golden Ivy updated a status on Facebook on 18 August 2023 that reads: “I’m not trying to ruin or drag someone here but y’all can help us stop something bad from happening. Is Fokol Is Nex is Nightmare’s song that Jimmy Backwoods took as his and now Nightmare can’t drop the song as his own because Jimmy told producers of the beat to take it off when it drops. We are willing to pay him back for the money he spent to license the song but he must stop promoting the song as his own!!”
Golden Ivy is one of Nightmare’s close friends and is also a rapper. Ivy and another close friend of Nightmare and rapper, Ybn Syre, who’s also Jimmy Backwoods’ cousin supported the claim of Jimmy promoting the song as his when it’s not. When I reach out to Nightmare, he confirmed that the statement Ivy posted on Facebook was indeed true. He claimed that Jimmy promoted the song that wasn’t his own. In the midst of all this, Backwoods posted his own status, on the same day too, showing a transaction of $23.14 US to @kidsnextdoor, who’s supposedly the producer of the beat. Nightmare also confirmed that Backwoods did buy the beat and it is the one used on the song. Initially, the beat that was used for the song was the one Nightmare downloaded on YouTube and Backwoods suggested that they get a legitimate beat since the song would be put on all digital streaming platforms, to avoid disputes on the licensing of a downloaded beat. And that’s when Backwoods bought the beat two months later, after the song had been produced.
Nightmare disagrees that Backwoods was the only person entirely behind bringing Bhut’Legend to the table. He said that Bhut’Legend wasn’t even their first option for features as Nightmare had recommended Gaffi and Backwoods recommended Lxndi, whom he had previously worked with on Akho Wea. Bhut’Legend was a third option, but he was the first artist to respond and was keen to jump on the song with them. Backwoods said that the Bhut’Legend was executed by him and that Bhut’Legend doesn’t even know who Nightmare is. After Backwoods had bought the beat, he proceeded to say that the beat belongs to himself and Nightmare, as he distances himself from that statement now.

Prior to Backwoods revealing the song’s artwork five days ago, himself and Nightmare were good. They were even on a verge of releasing a collaborative EP, with Is Fokol Is Nex featuring Bhut’Legend as a lead single. Backwoods was set to release the song on 25 August 2023 but not as his and Nightmare.

The above-attached screenshots are a conversation between Nightmare and Backwoods. The first account which shows a different is Backwoods’ now hacked account, where he claimed that the beat is theirs[himself and Nightmare], as someone who had bought the beat. The second screenshot is the time before Backwoods uploaded the artwork to the public and despite Nightmare’s dissatisfaction, he uploaded it regardless, which is what started this uproar to begin with.

This is the last conversation Nightmare and Jimmy Backwoods had. Nightmare wanted to buy the lease for the beat, so that he can release the song without being restricted. Backwoods had refused and scared off Nightmare with lawyers. Backwoods confirmed that he will release the song as his own because that’s his song. When I reached out to him to hear his side of the story, this is what he had to say:
“Bro, I don’t wanna go back and forth about this. If you know anything regarding the music business, then you should know who’s telling the truth. Who’s doing that hook? Who owns the license of the song? Who sent the song to Legend? I’m tired of people seeking for relevance using my name. For how long have I been enduring people’s opinions about me? Good or bad, people always have something to say about me.”
