MTIYA TALKS UNITY NPO

Sophumelela Mtiya finds inspiration from her childhood trauma to help her peers to live a far better life than hers. She created a non-profit organization that helps pupils with academic assistance, girls with sanitary pads and donates clothes to the underprivileged called Unity NPO.

“Growing up, I never really felt the love and support from my family. During my years of puberty, I was all alone. I had to figure everything by myself. I started to realise that I have a giving heart. So by starting this organisation I want to save everyone before they fall into the hard times I had. Seeing youngsters lose themselves when they should be building themselves is saddening. This organisation comes with everything starting from counselling, group therapies (teenagers engagement) and giving all so that we can all feel equal.” Mtiya said. Mtiya created WhatsApp groups with the help of her friends for academic assistance. The organization helps children with Maths, Physical Sciences, Accounting, and Geography from grades 10-12. Although Mtiya made an alternative to assist grades 8 and 9 with all subjects. The assigned tutors for these WhatsApp groups are Liyema Khaphiso, Kamva Shobi, Azania Gcakamane, Linamandla Sigabi, and Welile Fonci. Mtiya has been blessed with absolute best support from her Funda Senior Secondary School teacher, Cebolenkosi Qiniso Zulu who donated money to help grow the organization. Mtiya is obviously not working alone. Her team as the founder of the organization includes Onakho Tshewu as the Secretary, Sonwabise Lisa as the Organiser, Mbasa Mxalisa as the Treasurer, Anovuyo Kallie as the Media Spokesperson and additional members, David Ndabazandile, Asive Makeleni, and Zandile Mgxabaze. “Focusing on how it has been positively progressing . I see Unity NPO as an initiative that will be known for grooming equality, perfect mentalities for children that are still growing up and also a plattform of generosity in the future.” she added. Her name Sophumelela which translates to “we will succeed” is already a prophecy to this organisation’s progression. “We’re still collecting for a give-away day. Certain individuals that need sanitary pads on a weekly basis or once a month contact one of our members so that they can get them as soon as possible. Otherwise we will have a give-away day by the end of June holidays.” she concluded.
