ACANTHOSIS NIGRICANS

In a time where in our society there’s less education about numerous health issues. Acanthosis Nigricans is one of the less exposed skin conditions in our homes.

Acanthosis Nigricans is a skin condition characterised by dark, velvety patches in body folds and creases. Most children develop this condition are likely to be insulted for being pigsty by their parents. Not knowing that there is such a skin condition that puts a child at high risk at developing type 2 diabetes. It is mostly common on the neck and has cause many with the condition unknowledgeable to lose their self esteems as it affects their societal standard of beauty. This skin is treatable by a medical professional after medical diagnosis. It is a chronic condition as it could last years or a lifetime. There’s no cure for this condition as the prescribed treatment can only go as far as restoring some of normal colour and texture to the affected areas of the skins.

In order for one to consult a doctor for this skin condition. They must develop a darkening/thickness of their skin and it is also common for your skin to itch. The specific areas of the skin are armpits, groin and back of the neck. Acanthosis Nigricans is caused by insulin resistance, hormonal disorders such as ovarian cysts (a solid/fluid filled sac/pockets within/on surface of an ovary. Which usually disappears after few months but can cause complications if they don’t.) and hypothyroidism which is a production of less energy and results to fatigue, certain drugs and supplements such as high dose niacin which is a water-soluble vitamin found in meat, yeast and dairy products essential for metabolism and hypoma/cancerous tumor that begins growing in an internal organ such as stomach and liver. The risks about this skin condition ranges from obesity which as heavier as you are, the higher your risk of Acanthosis Nigricans and possibility of inheriting it from a family member. The complications of this skin condition is that if you have it, there’s high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
