Othandiweyo “Igwe” Mntonga was only 5 when he first watched soccer and all that love at first sight made him this burning young superstar.

It was only when he was 7 years old that Mntonga started playing under Phoenix Football Club‘s founder, Ta Ringo’s watch. Mntonga had it hard playing football because he was teased for being chubby. His debut was with the team Ta Ringo former coached, All Star. In 2016-2019, he played for Phoenix Football Club. He started playing for his current team that tops the league log of NBA, Seven Stars. He wishes to play for Mamelodi Sundowns and Chelsea. Locally inspired, Mntonga made first contact with his role model on Facebook. Lungile Whawhie is the gentleman that Mntonga aspires to be and idolised the way he played his position on the field. Mntonga asked Whawhie, “how would one be a great player?”. Who went on to say that discipline is priority followed by hard work and commitment.

Mntonga plays attacking midfielder, left and right wing. He thinks that his ability of dribbling through opponents and creating a lot of opportunities that helps his team. “Firstly, they should be disciplined but most players fail to understand discipline is. Discipline is an act whereby you do something you hate but do it like you love it. For an example, when the coach says run 50 laps, I know I hate doing many laps but I do them like I love them. I would say believing in yourself is important because the more you believe in yourself, the better you become. Patience is failed too by players because when it’s not your time, it’s not your time. Stay focused and consistent and your time will come.” Mntonga says to young footballers.
