Nontlantla Hlanzela is living with albinism, and this is her story.

Hlanzela is living with albinism, and her skin gets burned whenever there’s too much sun because of its sensitivity.

I think I was about ten… I asked the elders why was I different and they said that I was God’s favourite. I guess that they didn’t want to hurt my feelings.

Although her family was secretive about the skin condition Hlanzela has, Mrs. Guga broke the ice. Mrs. Guga was Hlanzela’s Grade 3 teacher, who explained to her. Fortunately, Hlanzela never got any backlash regarding her skin condition because she grew up in a society that knew what albinism is. Hlanzela’s solid support system and an informed society made her find no trigger in conspiracy theories about albinism. Hlanzela commented that she was and is not bothered by how these conspiracy theories affect people living with albinism because she knows the truth. Hlanzela concluded that nothing beats confidence and self-love and that they are essential for any insecure person living with albinism out there.
