Jimmy Backwoods open up about fallouts with other artists, working relationship with Nightmare, success of Akho Wea, Bhut’Legend reaching out to him, never living in Braamfontein again and the position of Khweza’s Hip Hop scene.

Jimmy Backwoods hasn’t been all year been himself and that’s evident in the way he has released zero music this year, excluding the open verse of DJ Slique’s Ekoneni. He says this year made him feel stagnant and people close to him were leaving him one by one.
“At the beginning of this year, I just felt like I was stuck in one place, and I had fallouts with a lot of people and I’m glad things happened that way. Working with a lot of niggas brought me hell but I don’t wanna touch on that nor do I wanna mention names. I’ll talk about it in my solo project though. I have a lot of shit to say on that.”
His solo project, which he recently announced that it will be his debut album, is set to be released next year. In the meantime, what’s promising to be out sooner than 2024 is a collaborative project with Nightmare. Since last year, Jimmy has been intentional in adding IsiXhosa in his raps and that’s where Nightmare makes a lot of sense for the upcoming project. He says that he didn’t have a motive when he infused IsiXhosa in his raps having been rapping in English only previously but it’s because a lot of people outside Komani didn’t know who he really was and had to introduce himself the Xhosa style of rapping to let people know where he’s from. Him and Nightmare had worked closely since Jimmy’s biggest song on SoundCloud, Crackheads & 808s and the working relationship had been pure from the onset. He says that he also wanted to grow and learn a few things from Nightmare since he uses vernacular approach on most of his songs. He added that not a lot of people are proud of their vernacular language, so it was high time he embraced it before he got to the top.
Jimmy’s last single was his biggest song, which is Akho Wea featuring Blxck X and Lxndi. He says the song opened a lot of doors for him in the industry and made him lose a lot of people. I saw the fake niggas, the realest niggas and the niggas that actually support me and not just dick ride because everyone else is doing it, he says. He added that it has been a rollercoaster ride carrying Akho Wea’s success on his back but what’s a success story without failure?

Bhut’Legend is one of the prominent figures to reach out to Jimmy after the Akho Wea’s success. Jimmy says that it’s fire working with Bhut’Legend and they have made a lot of songs together. On 25 August 2023, Jimmy Backwoods and Nightmare are set to release Is Fokol Is Nefeaturing Bhut’Legend.

In 2020, Jimmy had been a Braamfontein frequent resident until he lost interest in the space and moved to Sandton.
“I actually moved outta Braam a while ago and lived in Sandton. I just go there to people’s studios and perform whenever I feel like it because they love me there. A LOT. It’s actually my favourite spot in Jozi but I’d never live there again.”
When I asked him why he’d never live in Braamfontein, he had this to say. Everyone looks the same. They dress the same, talk the same, make the same music and drink a lot. I don’t want that. I don’t have nothing against Braam honestly, I’m just protecting my brand, he says.
He concluded by commenting on Khweza’s Hip Hop scene. He says that artists should put aside their egos and work together. Artists from Khweza hate each other but they have never even met. He added that tried working with other artists but egos got into the way and he’s not doing it again.
